This is a Big Leaf Maple bowl, large and heavy. 7 1/4" tall 13" wide and 2" thick. It was made as part of an entry in the Southern Alberta Woodworkers {SAWS} Biannual juried exhibition. This particular piece is from stunning bit of burl with a remarkable lack of flaws! The shape is simple and I tried to have the wood "speak" for itself by working it to a very fine surface and using multiple coats of finish to show the natural colours and depth of the woodgrain. I incorporated a 2" band of small beads near the top on the outside to draw attention to the small portion of burl surface that was left unturned and also as an aid in gripping and moving this large bowl.
This piece is not a salad bowl nor will it blow away in a moderate breeze!
