Manitoba Maple, aka Box Elder, is very common in Western Canada, similar to maple in colour it is softer and grows much faster. It has a penchant for producing burls often large, sometimes incorporating a vivid red colour. This particular piece is turned with the tree's heart centred on the middle of the bowl which allows for an unusual presentation of the burls around the outside of the bowl and a view of the growth rings as the tree grew and where the "burls" began to develop as the tree aged. I don't use stain often but using a black initial finish really made the grain "pop" and accentuated the burl structure particularly after the stain was sanded back to reveal the lighter wood colour. This is a very large bowl suitable as a conversational centre pice.
Dimensions are 20" wide 6 1/4” tall and 2" thick
